Get Out and Go Treasure Hunt

Get the family out and go on a nature-inspired treasure hunt! Follow the treasure map to search for hidden clues while exploring the natural areas of Gallery Park and Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie. Walk or ride your bicycle from Park Center to Air Station Prairie and earn stamps for answering questions about discoveries you make along the way.

Pick up your treasure map at Park Center any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Hunt takes one hour to complete, and the event concludes at 3 p.m.

Please note: The scavenger hunt ends at a different location than it starts. If you parked at the starting point (Park Center), you’ll need to walk back to your car after finishing. (Route distance: 0.84 miles one way; Round trip: 1.68 miles)

Summer Restoration Work Day at The Grove

For ages 8+, volunteers under age 15 must participate with an adult.

Collect seeds or remove non-native, invasive plants to make way for native wildflowers, grasses and trees. Bring work gloves if you have them and meet at the Interpretive Center. RSVPs are appreciated so we can so we can plan appropriate Work Day activities. Work parties may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Grove Arrival Day

This free event celebrates the anniversary of the day the pioneering Kennicott family first arrived at The Grove. Meet costumed interpreters and discover what life was like in 1836.

Head over to the Kennicott House at 3 p.m. for a signing of Elizabeth Kopp’s book about Robert Kennicott, A Frozen Fog. Refreshments and mocktails will be served.

Assist in the restoration efforts at Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie by helping with a variety of restoration activities such as removing non-native invasive plants or collecting seed. Cures and Curiosities: A 19th Century Medicine Exhibit Opening

Explore the fascinating world of 19th century medicine at The Grove’s new exhibit. See how science and superstition battled for dominance during this time of medical innovation, through historical artifacts and first-hand accounts from several Kennicott doctors and dentists.

Discover the tools and techniques that shaped the evolving medical field, from bleeding bowls to early surgical instruments, to natural remedies from plants grown right here at The Grove.

The exhibit will also peek into the often-reprehensible treatment of patients in asylums and the fight to revolutionize mental health treatment. Featuring Dr. John Kennicott, his brothers, William and Jonathan Asa, and his nephew, Dr. Guy Kennicott, this new exhibit brings history to life.

The exhibit will be open during summer history tour hours following the June 28 opening.

Pioneer Day

Pack your sense of adventure and step back in time at Pioneer Day at The Grove! You’ll bring the 1800s pioneer experience to life as you follow your map and travel along The Grove’s trails. At each stop on your “road trip”, you’ll immerse yourself in pioneer life with hands-on activities and historical encounters.

Activities Include:

  • Hands-on activities like candle dipping, tin punching and pioneer chores
  • Play old-fashioned pioneer games and enjoy music from the past
  • Meet reenactors from a Civil War-era Army Corps of Engineers and learn about their important contributions

Note: Timed entry tickets are available every 15 minutes starting at 11:00 AM. The final admission is at 2:00 PM, and the event concludes at 3:00 PM. Be sure to select your preferred time when purchasing tickets online.

International Mud Day Celebration

Get down and dirty with The Grove!

Join in the fun of International Mud Day (IMD), an annual global celebration to encourage children and adults to get outside, connect with nature and embrace the joy of playing in the mud. Discover the vital role soil, dirt and mud (yes, they are all related!) play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting life on our planet.

The Grove has set up a special Soil Scientist exploration area where kids – and kids at heart – can build, dig, scoop, shape and squish while exploring the magical properties of mud!
