Scouting Activities at Historic Wagner Farm

The Poultry Business

During the 1920’s, children were the primary caretakers of the many chickens that roamed the barnyard. Not only caretakers, they also sold eggs, feathers, and meat for money. This program takes scouts back in time to try their hands at raising chickens and creating a successful poultry business. Kids will collect eggs, handle chickens, and learn about all the necessities needed to raise a healthy and fruitful fowl flock.

Horsin’ Around

Scouts are invited to come meet our draft horse team. This program will educate boys and girls about proper horsemanship, draft horse breeds, and how farmers used these particular animals. Activities include grooming, harnessing, and proper handling techniques.

Milking Madness

Get your pails ready because it’s time for milkin’. Scouts will meet Wagner Farms cows and try their hands at hand and machine milking. They will learn the difference between different breeds of dairy cows and how milk goes from the milk pail to your kitchen table.

Farm Fresh Snacking (temporarily unavailable – check back late spring!)

Let’s get in the kitchen and cook up a delicious, healthy snack from ingredients on a farm! Scouts will learn about the fruits and vegetables grown on a Midwest farm and what goes into their production. Kids will pick produce fresh from the farm (seasonal) and whip up their own snack to enjoy together.

Step Back in Time

What was life like on a 1920’s farm? Scouts will use the farmhouse to explore the life of a child growing up during this time. Participants will experience daily chores like making butter and sewing using period tools. There will also be time to explore leisure past times and entertainment.
