Avoca Park Tot Lot

Two half basketball courts.

Fun playground for kids on the younger side.

In 2022, the Park District acquired a one-acre parcel next to Avoca West Elementary School from Avoca School District 37. The site will become a neighborhood park, providing public open space during the school year when school playgrounds are not available for community use.

The existing Avoca West School playground serves children ages 5–12 during the school day. However, younger children in the neighborhood still need a place to play on weekdays while school is in session. The proposed park concept would create a Tot Lot with equipment designed specifically for that age group.

The Tot Lot concept includes a main play area with a composite play structure and elevated components accessed from a raised berm to support more inclusive play. Additional features would include independent play elements such as a playhouse, sensory panels, a communication board, and a swing set. Part of the playground surface would be poured-in-place rubber, with the remaining area covered in wood chips.

Because the site is a wooded area with mature trees, the concept includes a gravel pathway that creates an exploration loop around the existing trees. Understory trees and shrubs would also be planted to add seasonal color and interest.

Work is scheduled to begin after the 2025–2026 school year. Most construction will take place during summer break and be completed before the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
