Community Park West is one of the Park District’s largest parks and hosts a lot of events and leagues. Construction on the park, designated as Community Park West began in 2000 and the park was opened to the public as the district’s premier sports field park in August 24, 2002. Park features included lighted ball fields for softball and flag football, soccer fields, a basketball court, playground and mini climbing wall, walking paths, a nature area, and a 15,000 square foot skate park (Glenview’s first). Funding sources for this park included a $200,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant from the State of Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a $450,000 budget appropriation from the State of Illinois, and a $100,000 grant from the ITW (Illinois Tool Works) Foundation secured through the efforts of the Glenview Park Foundation.

In 2002, the park district obtained an additional 57.5 acre parcel of land located between the Illinois Tollway (I-294) and Community Park West (the 37.5 acre sports park west of Milwaukee Avenue). The land was acquired through another land purchase/donation agreement with Town and Country Properties, in the same manner the land for the original 37.5 acres for Community Park West was acquired. Under the terms of this agreement, the park district paid $4.75 million for 28.75 acres while Town and Country donated the remaining 28.75 acres to the park district.

While no use was immediately identified for the property, it was the largest remaining tract of open space remaining within park district boundaries and the amount paid for the property made its per acre cost ($82,600) well below the $400,000-$500,000 per acre selling price of land in Glenview at the time. The acquisition was paid for through the sale of a general obligation bond to be paid back over 8 years from Capital Development fund thus avoiding the need for the district to seek the authority to raise taxes through a referendum.

Construction on Phase II of Community Park West began in spring 2008. Park features included a “four ball field” diamond pinwheel (partially funded by a $700,000 contribution from Glenview Youth Baseball), a five acre plus dog park, pathways, trails, wetlands and natural areas, a playground and permanent baggo and bocce courts. Other funding sources for Phase II included a $400,000 OSLAD grant.

Glenview’s first dog park “Community Bark West” opened on June 27, 2009. The four diamond baseball complex opened on April 30, 2010.

A disc golf course was added to the Community Park West in 2011.
