New Deputy Executive Director

The Glenview Park District is pleased to announce Johnathan Kiwala as its new Deputy Executive Director, where he will lead the administrative operations, overseeing human resources, information technology, finance and risk management. Kiwala’s first day will be Monday, April 28.

Kiwala formerly served as the first and only Executive Director of the Kenilworth Park District since 2014, where he successfully built the district from the ground up. Kiwala grew full-time staff by 300% and expanded programming from a single offering to over 175 programs and events. He led the acquisition and nearly $3 million renovation of a nationally historic building, transforming it into the community’s central hub for local organizations and youth enrichment programs. He also served as the lead project manager for a $1.2 million Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant construction project, implementing the first ADA accessible playground in Kenilworth.

Prior to his time at the Kenilworth Park District, Kiwala gained valuable public sector experience working for the Village of Kenilworth, the City of Overland Park, Kansas, and Southern Illinois University. He serves on the board of the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association.  Johnathan holds a Master of Public Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Southern Illinois University.

“Johnathan has grown the Kenilworth Park District into a thriving and sustainable agency,” said Park District Executive Director Michael McCarty. “He brings the necessary skills and visionary experience we need to lead our administrative division.”

Kiwala is a father and an avid traveler who, along with his wife, loves experiencing new cultures and trying new foods. Beyond his passion for parks and recreation, Johnathan is deeply committed to giving back to causes close to his heart. He serves as President of the Michael Matters Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting patients diagnosed with brain cancer. He also volunteers with BrainUp, a foundation focused on advancing brain cancer research in the search for a cure. Additionally, he contributes to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Master of Public Administration Advisory Board, helping to guide and mentor future public service professionals.

“The Glenview Park District has built a remarkable legacy as a leader in parks and recreation, setting the bar for innovation, environmental stewardship and community collaboration,” Kiwala explained. “I’m honored to be part of a team that continually raise the standard for what a park district can achieve.”
