Tips for Healthy Teeth presented by Graber & Gyllenhaal Orthodontics
Sticky, chewy candy (like caramels or gummies) clings to teeth the longest. Chocolate melts away quicker, so it’s a better option for your smile!
Instead of snacking all day, eat your treats with meals. Your mouth makes more saliva then, which helps wash away sugar and protect teeth.
Candy that sticks to braces (taffy, gummy bears, caramel) can cause trouble. Melty treats are less spooky for your teeth!
After trick-or-treating, make sure to brush (especially before bed). A good rinse with water after candy helps if brushing isn’t possible right away.
Set up a “candy swap” at home—trade extra sweets for a toy, fun activity, or special outing. Less sugar, same fun!
Staying away from hard candy, candy apples, ice cubes, taffy and caramel will help you avoid extra visits to the orthodontist for a broken bracket!
