About the Glenview Farmers Market
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you close if it rains?
The market does not generally close if it is raining, but you may not see all of the vendors. Remember that the market is our farmers’ livelihood and they will be there to sell, no matter what! Others have products that would be seriously damaged by inclement weather. In general, you should assume that we are open.
What produce will I find at the market?
We are so accustomed to seeing fruit and vegetables year-round in grocery stores, we forget that these foods only grow in certain regions and seasons. That means you will not find sweet corn on opening day, or pumpkins in July, or strawberries in October. Our growers are dependent on the weather and growing cycles. Whatever they have will be packed with flavor and nutrition, since it is picked its peak! All our fruits and vegetables are grown within 150 miles of Glenview.
What else will I find at the market besides produce?
In addition to these items we have lamb, beef and poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, breads and other baked goods, fresh cut flowers, granola, jellies & jams, honey, gourmet sauces and soups, dog treats, a few craft artisans and even a knife sharpener who comes to the market every other week. Please see our Vendors page for more information about available products.
Are there any organic or heirloom products?
Yes. Some farmers bring heirloom varieties and one is entirely certified organic. Most of our vendors use many sustainable methods of production, which are outlined on our Vendors page.
Is Wagner Farm open during the market? What can I do or see there?
Yes! You are welcome to venture across Wagner Road to roam the grounds of Wagner Farm. Visit the farm animals. Learn about agricultural life during the 1920s from our costumed interpreters, visit the replica grocery store and ice cream parlor as well as interactive exhibits in the Heritage Center.
History of the Glenview Farmers’ Market
The Glenview Farmers’ Market was started in 1988 by the Glenview Women of Today as a way of supporting locally grown produce and to provide the community with a healthy (and fun) option for food. Every Saturday, farmers, flower growers, and residents would gather at Jackman Park to share the good times. In 2007, GWT was pleased to hand over the market management to the Glenview Park District. GWT continues to support the market through funding of various projects and providing volunteer crossing guards.
The most natural place to hold a farmer’s market was at a farm, so the Park District chose to move the market to Historic Wagner Farm. Visibility of the market and customer parking were two major concerns voiced by the vendors at the time, and the change in location addressed both of those issues. Families are welcome to spend time on the farm visiting our animals, wandering through the restored farmhouse or visitors center, checking out the equipment, or enjoying some of their fresh market produce.
