Our Mission

The mission of the Glenview Senior Center is to strive to provide an environment for senior citizens to share and develop personal interactions through social, educational, and recreational activities and to present opportunities to contribute their services and talents to various community needs.

 

 

Friendship, Fun and Opportunities to Serve

If you are 55 or older and looking for a place to play, learn and make new friends, the Glenview Senior Center is the place for you. Located in the east wing of Park Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., the handicapped accessible Senior Center features:

  • A convenient drive-up entrance
  • A  spacious craft room
  • A billiard and card room
  • Classrooms
  • Meeting spaces and cozy areas for socializing
  • Kitchen facilities

Senior Center visitors can also:

  • Join Park Center’s health club or swimming pool (for an additional fee)
  • Use the walking track (no charge)
  • Enjoy the convenience of NorthShore University Health System's physical therapy facility and retail space for health-related products.

Outside the Center is a lovely lake with a walking area and benches for resting and bird watching.

The Glenview Senior Center is one of only 80 out of 1400 senior centers throughout the nation to be accredited by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). The Glenview Senior Center boasts over 1200 members and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007-2008. For more information on joining the Senior Center, click here.

The Glenview Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm offering recreations programs, classes, services, and refreshments and planned activities that are open to the public.

Classes
The Glenview Senior Center offers a number of fee-based classes each season that are open to the public. Classes offered for the upcoming fall season include:

Services & Activities for Older Adults

AARP/Mature Driving
Approved course of two sessions totaling eight hours. Class offered during the last week of every month, noon-4 pm, Wed. & Fri.
Who: Open to adults 55+
Fee: $14; AARP members $12
Register: At the Senior Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave.

Senior CenterRules of the Road
Approved course to assist with the written test for renewing your Driver's License. There is no fee but registration is mandatory.
Who: Open to adults 55+
Register: At the Senior Center (It is not necessary to wait for your renewal letter to go to the test center to renew your license.)

Health & Education Series
Social service programs, open to the public, are presented at Park Center on specified Weds. and Thurs. from 1-2 pm. They are sponsored by the Glenview Senior Center, North Shore Senior Center and NorthShore University Health Systems. Reservations are not necessary. Watch for program titles on Glenview cable television, the Village Newsletter and local newspapers.

Computer Lab
Are you totally intimidated by the computer? Unsure about how to turn it on? Don't know what a computer "mouse" is? We have the solution! Our dedicated volunteers will be happy to sit down with you in our computer lab. They will familiarize you with the workings of a computer at a pace that's comfortable for you and prepare you to move on to e-mail, the Internet, independent exploration, etc. By appointment. Shredding Program
Protect yourself from identity theft by shredding your personal information and sensitive documents before disposing of them. This free service is available daily 12-3 pm. Minimum amounts at a time, please.

Senior Discussion Programs
The Glenview Senior Center invites all retired men and women to take advantage of the Senior Center's speaker programs, held at Park Center. There is no fee and refreshments are available.

"Individuals and Issues"
The second Wednesday of each month, 9:30-11:30 am. Outstanding speakers, stimulating topics and exciting programs. Join us in the Lakeview Room to participate in discussions.

"First Monday"
Usually held on the first Monday of each month from 10-11:30 am with speakers on a variety of interesting topics. For specific dates and topics, call

Glenview Senior Center Presents
Entertaining programs on occasional Sundays. Light refreshments served at 1 pm, followed by 2 pm performance. $1 admission. Upcoming dates:

Special Club Trips

Blood Pressure Testing: Senior Wing: Each Thursday, 11-11:55 am (drop-in); NorthShore University HealthSystem: Each third Tues., 10 am-12 pm (by appointment - 847-570-5020)

Counseling and Community Consultant: Each Thursday, 9 am-2 pm, by appointment. Also at Village Hall, Mon.-Fri., (847) 904-4366.

SHIP Volunteer (Senior Health Insurance Program): A SHIP volunteer is available at the Senior Center to help you file your Medicare and related health insurance claims. Pull your paperwork together and make an appointment. Call (847) 724-4793.

Special Feature
A Benefit Book and Community Resource Sheet are available to all seniors and their families at no charge. This booklet is a consolidation of entitlements for older adults and lists many available resources. All families and older adults should avail themselves of this information. The booklet, sponsored by the Glenview Park District Senior Center and the Village of Glenview, is available at either location.

Senior Discount on Classes
All seniors ages 65 yrs. and older who reside in the Glenview Park District are entitled to a 20% discount in the fee of most park district recreation classes. This discount does not apply to programs or fees at the Tennis Club, Ice Center, Golf Clubs or pools. Please request this discount at the time of registration.

 

Help the Glenview Senior Center Support Our Troops by
Donating Supplies and Supplying Names for

Pack for Iraq

For the past several years, Glenview Senior Center members have been preparing packages to send to U.S. troops serving our country in Iraq. Contents of these packages are gathered through donations. If you would like to support the seniors in this worthwhile project, you are encouraged to donate items or funds to help pay mailing costs. Donations are accepted M-F 9 am-4 pm at the Glenview Senior Center, 2400 Chestnut Ave., Glenview, IL 60026. Items needed include:

  • Wet wipes
  • Tube socks
  • Beef jerky
  • Single drink packets
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, other toiletries that travel well
  • Hard candy
  • Comic books
  • Pens/paper
  • Plush toys & kids toys (squeeze balls, paddle ball, things soldiers can give to children in the towns they are fighting in)
  • Food such as snack bars, freeze dried microwave meals, soup, other items that travel well and do not spoil

The Senior Center is also seeking the names of troops serving in Iraq who would like to receive a package from home. If you know of someone, please call the Senior Center at (847) 724-4793.
